Overview

The Procurement and Supply Chain Management function is responsible for the interface with those third-party organizations who support our business, whether that be for procurement of goods and services or the relationship management that underpins any such activities. They support project delivery teams across the sectors to ensure the strategic direction is identified and delivered.

Role Overview: Sustainable Procurement Manager

The role of Sustainable Procurement Manager will report to the Head of Sustainable Procurement (SP) & Supplier Relationship Manager (SRM). The candidate will be responsible for supporting the design and implementation of the sustainable & responsible procurement strategy and plan.

The postholder will devise and implement robust roadmaps, with associated improvement plans, to achieve our ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets to be flowed down to our strategic suppliers.

This role is key to ensuring we are fully compliant with all regulatory requirements and that we accelerate our implementation of sustainable procurement requirements, including the transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, achieving biodiversity net gain, and managing our social value risks, including EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion), modern slavery, and others, whilst simultaneously setting and measuring appropriate ESG targets with our key suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop our Sustainable Procurement Policy, Strategy, and implementation, aligning with Costain’s golden thread sustainability requirements.

  • Manage the broad set of stakeholders, influencing and driving the sustainability agenda.

  • Proactively maintain and develop subject matter expertise on evolving regulations and legislation.

  • Track sustainability trends and best practices to enhance procurement strategies and understanding of good and best practices.

  • Support the category and sourcing teams in identifying relevant targets and plans appropriate to their supplier base.

  • Work with the sectors to ensure sustainable procurement requirements are embedded and evidenced through sector plans, key projects, programs, and frameworks.

  • Work closely with relevant suppliers and category teams to build engagement programs centered around agreed sustainability priorities and targets.

  • Develop and embed sustainability requirements in key areas of the SRM process, including onboarding, performance management, strategic supplier relationship management, and capability building.

  • Define targets, measures, and tracking, including relevant third-party tools, services, and data sources.

  • Deliver online and face-to-face training for key stakeholders, building understanding and capability in sustainable procurement practices.

  • Work with interdependent disciplines within Costain to ensure that sustainability is considered at suitable stages of the procurement process, enabling successful implementation of sustainable procurement requirements.


Qualifications

Essential:

  • Member of Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply qualified (Level 5 minimum) or a similar professional certification in procurement (e.g., CPSM).

  • Significant experience in an ESG role (Sustainability in Procurement and Supply Chain).

  • Experience in managing complex projects and driving change initiatives.

  • Experience in ESG & Risk frameworks, assessments, and reporting.

  • Subject matter expert in Supply Chain Net Zero/Sustainability.

  • Thorough and current knowledge of sustainability practices and applicable laws and regulations.

  • Experience with promoting the ESG/Sustainability agenda and driving cultural change.

  • Experience in planning, organizing, and managing multiple projects.

  • Strong Change Management experience to deliver programs requiring Executive Sponsorship.

  • Adaptable at working collaboratively in both team environments and remotely.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office Suite proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.


Desirable:

  • Experience in developing and delivering category management.

  • Knowledge of Infrastructure Industry Procurement and Supply Chain Operations.

  • Experience of working within a matrix organization, with abilities to influence at all levels.

  • Knowledge of Costain Procurement and Supply Chain Management systems and requirements.

  • Working knowledge of procurement-based software (e.g., eProcurement software such as SourceDogg, eJAGGAER, Arriba sourcing, or similar).

  • Previous experience in the built environment.
