Overview

We’re looking for a passionate and knowledgeable Sustainability Manager to join our growing Environment and Sustainability team at National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).

Supporting the Head of Environment and Sustainability you’ll drive our NGED business forward on sustainability issues and delivering our net-zero commitments. You’ll develop a wider sustainability strategy that reduces our overall impact on the environment whilst delivering tangible business benefits and support the business and supply chain in delivering this strategy.

You’ll lead on our sustainability reporting, ensuring we have good quality information to inform our strategic thinking. You’ll also work with both internal and external stakeholders to exert influence and leadership in the development and implementation of sustainability and net-zero strategies that add value and resilience to Electricity Distribution whilst enhancing its reputation.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Flexible working can also be considered.

The role can be based at any of our office locations within the licence areas of West Midlands, East Midlands, South West and Wales.

Main responsibilities

  • Work on delivering NGEDs components of our Group Responsible Business Charter commitments:
    • Lead the development of our carbon reduction strategy working with key stakeholders across the business (NGED and Group).
    • Support the delivery of ED net zero commitments for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, through the implementation of that strategy.
    • Lead the development of our work to protect and enhance the natural environment.
    • Support the business in understanding the impacts of climate change on our assets and develop plans to address them.
  • Lead on NGEDs Sustainability reporting:
    • NGED contribution to Group Responsible Business Report (Environment Pillar), including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
    • Manage the provision, development and publication of Annual Environment Report and other Regulatory reporting.
    • Development of robust assurance and governance processes for sustainability metrics/KPIs/Commitments.
  • Provide direction and coordination on sustainability across all construction activities, focusing on net-zero construction, net-gain and waste reduction.
  • Manage ad hoc projects to support the implementation of the strategy and delivery of our commitments.
  • Work across the business to develop our strategy on sustainable procurement.
  • Work with our Regulation team on development of our ED3 future business plans, including stakeholder engagement.
  • Pro-actively engage with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies to ensure our approach is leading and aligned with industry best practice.
  • Build and support broader network of sustainability professionals and practitioners across the business and other companies to facilitate knowledge and good practice transfers.
  • Lead an engaged and informed team, developing and supporting them to enable them to deliver on their objectives.

Ideal candidate:

  • Thorough knowledge of climate change impacts, mitigation and adaptation strategies as well as reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of National Grid key activities and practice in relation to environment and sustainability is desirable.
  • Suitable academic qualification such as Environmental, Climate Change, Sustainability Degree, Diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent data management, report and procedure writing skills; ability to integrate information effectively, summarise with relevance and suitable impact.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability and confidence to communicate and build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Capability to engage and inform internal and external stakeholders in positive, constructive ways.
  • Broad appreciation of EDs business and how sustainability can help to achieve its objectives.
  • Member of professional body (desirable).
