Wates Group is seeking a dedicated Sustainability Manager to join our Residential team in London where the focus is on high & mid rise units with some houses. As a developer contractor, Wates Residential focuses on investing, developing, building, and selling quality affordable and sustainable housing in collaboration with Local Authorities, Registered Providers, and public bodies.

As the Sustainability Manager, you will support and guide the business region on implementing the Wates Residential sustainability plan. This involves both operational support and product design, including sustainable construction practices, low-carbon homes, energy management systems, and renewable energy solutions. Your efforts will contribute to our net-zero carbon and nature-positive goals.

As our Sustainability Manager you will: 

  • Deliver the Residential sustainability plan implementation and ensure governance compliance in the region; working closely with the design, development, commercial, cost estimating, procurement, delivery and customer care teams.
  • Ensure regional or local regulatory or client specific requirements are incorporated into the wider Residential business unit sustainability plan. Promote environmental best practice building standards (e.g. BREEAM, Passivhaus, AECB, RIBA, LETI, Well, etc.), manage whole life carbon assessments and green infrastructure planning to achieve biodiversity net gain targets.
  • Lead data collection and management for projects with the support of Group functions. Provide inputs to annual reporting and prepare case studies.
  • Contribute to the creation of project win strategies / themes at a regional level. Support and draft specific high quality sustainability orientated responses during bids.
  • Promote environmental awareness, capability and competence of the regional staff by leading, delivering and participating in targeted and effective training and familiarisation to develop colleagues’ knowledge.
  • Manage the appointment of the environmental consultants. Hold regular principal calls/meetings with our consultants to track progress and any issues.
  • Support stakeholder engagement, particularly with our supply chain to ensure we meet our sustainability commitments and scope 3 targets.
  • Represent the company in a professional and intelligent manner. Develop value propositions with Sales & Marketing and Development Management teams on development projects and undertake thorough review of the Employers Requirements and identify any risks/opportunities.
  • Be supported by the Residential Head of Sustainability and Wates Group Sustainability experts and contribute towards achievement of Group-wide targets and initiatives.
