What can you expect from your graduate programme?
Our Safety and Sustainability and Asset (SS&A) Graduate Programme is more than just a job. It’s a launchpad for your future. You’ll spend two years rotating across different SS&A functions from keeping our staff and customers safe to projects which will enhance our stations and assets. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals, gaining hands-on experience and tackling real-workplace challenges that truly make a difference.
You’ll start out with several weeks of in-depth training, covering business knowledge as well as essential skills you’ll need for a successful start. Along the way you’ll build excellent foundational knowledge while getting to know our business and our people. During this programme, you’ll have the chance to rotate across our SS&A team, where you’ll be supporting a specific business on both day-to-day and strategic issues.
As a SS&A Graduate, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in various aspects of Safety and Sustainability and asset management and Projects and contribute to the overall success of our organisation.
- You will be working within a busy department supporting across all 5 diverse areas of the directorate – Safety, Sustainability, Property Services, Projects and PMO and Economic Development and Communities, providing general support to the whole team.
- You will work with the Sustainability team to contribute to the team’s activities to ensure legal compliance of our operational activities and actions to achieve the Scottish Government target of Net Zero Carbon by 2045.
- You will work within the different sections of Property Services, understanding the role of the service desk in the raising and closing of works orders, our role in undertaking asset management and our lease obligations set out within the Station Access Conditions and management of works by our own directly employed labour and contracted labour including contract management.
- You will contribute to Economic Development and Community Team’s ‘ScotRail in the Community’ programme, working directly with communities and stakeholders in areas such as community rail, station regeneration and active travel.
- You will contribute to the Projects and PMO team, taking on a small project and working with the project managers and project control managers on all aspects including initialisation, implementation and close-down.
Requirements
To be considered for this role you must have as a minimum:
- Qualifications (a degree) at SCQF Level 9 in Safety and Risk Management, Business Asset Management or Sustainability/Environmental Studies
- Be able to start in the business full time in August 2025
- You will be detail-oriented with excellent organisational and time management abilities.
- You will be a self-starter, who is proactive and self-motivated in your approach to work and learning, with a willingness to develop and grow your skills.
- Any prior internships, coursework, or projects related to asset management, safety or sustainability will be advantageous.
