OCU Group currently have a new opportunity for an experienced Sustainability and Environment Manager to join us covering the M62/M56 corridor.  As a Regional Sustainability and Environment Manager, you will be responsible for leading the sustainability and environmental initiatives and programmes across a designated region. You will ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards and company policies, while promoting a culture of environmental and sustainability excellence. Your role involves implementing sustainability strategies, providing environment and sustainability leadership to SHEQ teams within your region, and collaborating with stakeholders to drive continual improvement and achieve organisational objectives.

As our Regional S&E Manager, you will report directly to the Group Head of Sustainability & Environment and work alongside the Regional S&E Managers and SHEQ Managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement regional sustainability strategies, policies, and programs aligned with company objectives, regulatory requirements, industry best practices and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with senior management and stakeholders to set sustainability goals, targets, and performance indicators, and monitor progress towards achieving them.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, standards, and legislation.
  • Monitor changes in legislation, assess their impact on operations, and implement necessary measures to maintain compliance.
  • Conduct environmental inspections and assessments to identify potential impacts, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Implement risk management strategies, controls, and mitigation measures to minimise environmental risks, prevent pollution, and enhance environmental performance across your region.
  • Oversee the investigation of environmental incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and contributing factors, and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of incidents and performance metrics.
  • Develop and deliver sustainability and environmental training programmes and initiatives to increase employee awareness, competence, and engagement.
  • Provide specialist guidance and support to operational teams to meet contractual and legal requirements and drive best practice.
  • Promote a culture of continual improvement and accountability, encouraging employees to actively participate in sustainability and initiatives.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in an environmental & sustainability management role, preferably within the construction, infrastructure, utilities, or engineering industries.
  • Deep knowledge and practical implementation of environmental regulations, standards, and best practices, such as ISO14001 and relevant environmental legislation.
  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or higher (e.g. environmental science, sustainability management), and/or IEMA Practitioner level or higher.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects, and drive results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Experience in conducting environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments, and proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to travel within the region as required and a valid driving licence.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and staying abreast of evolving sustainability issues and solutions.
