Overview
Purpose of the role
Originates competitively priced SAF offtake agreements to deliver on the Group’s carbon roadmap and 10% SAF target by 2030 whilst positioning the Group’s SAF portfolio to meet net zero by 2050. Identify, develop, execute and manage strategic investments in SAF projects or IP where necessary to access favourable SAF offtake agreements. Target all SAF business cases with a positive NPV relative to the “do nothing” of fossil jet fuel plus carbon.
Accountabilities:
- Identify and develop strategic sustainable fuel partnerships, investments and offtake opportunities to achieve IAG’s announced decarbonization goals, including: business case creation analysis & development, technical and sustainability due diligence, and offtake/ investment agreement negotiation.
- Source competitively priced SAF to meet the Group’s short term voluntary and regulatory requirements as aligned with the Group’s carbon roadmap.
- Develop a comprehensive risk analysis of all potential new SAF commitments from a capital and an offtake perspective. Evaluate opportunities and risks surrounding emerging and existing carbon incentives for production and consumption.
- Develop appropriate logistics supply chains for handling SAF to point of consumption. Collaborate with SAF Optimiser and IAG’s Fuel team to ensure new SAF supply is integrated within the wider jet fuel supply portfolio.
- Act as shareholder representative for any SAF-related investments to ensure the interests of the Group are promoted. Act as board director for investments requiring board representation.
- Work with SAF Customer Solutions Manager to align SAF scope 3 sponsorship to originated SAF offtake agreements.
- Contract Management of all executed supply deals to maximise value and sustainability of the supplier relationship.
- Provide SAF and SAF-related technical and subject matter expertise and guidance both internally and externally. Co-ordinate and manage SAF Steering Group.
- Advise senior leaders on rapidly evolving sustainable fuels landscape to strategically position IAG.
- Engage in and connect internal stakeholders to the latest SAF developments and trends, including representing IAG at industry events and other platforms.
- Support to Head of Sustainability and Head of Carbon on policy advocacy on a global/regional basis.
- Support to Group and Opco Communications teams to drive the Group’s reputational enhancement through internal and external PR on SAF.
- Build and maintain relationships with relevant airlines, associations, and government stakeholders to influence the development of aligned local, regional, and national policies consistent with IAG’s strategy.
- Serve as a company champion of SAF’s contribution to IAG’s broader environmental sustainability strategy.
Required skills & experience:
- Thorough knowledge of current state of SAF: Technical (feedstock/pathways, logistics, opportunities/constraints), Commercial (current and future players, vertical value chain, competitor activities), Policy (Current and proposed legislation).
- Commercial expertise in origination with extensive experience of negotiating and managing contracts and complex agreements.
- Knowledge of sustainability and greenhouse gas life cycle assessment, including familiarity with the main regulatory frameworks (EU, UK, US).
- Requires a deep understanding of renewable fuels and energy transition issues, experience partnering cross-functionally in a large, corporate environment and a history driving results.
- Basic knowledge of petroleum industry; specifically jet fuel and/or refined products and logistics.
- Skilled in understanding and explaining commercial risk and technical concepts in a manner tailored to the audience.
- Ability to and demonstrated track record of developing meaningful relationships with colleagues and industry peers.
- Must have the ability to assume a high level of responsibility, working independently and collaboratively within a large organization.
- Must have ability to balance a wide range of competing assignments and deliver high-quality results occasionally within very tight time frames.
- Must have ability to properly manage highly sensitive and confidential information.
- Must demonstrate attention to detail and have strong written, numeracy and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate insights from technical reports, publications, and presentations in a structured, digestible, and concise manner.
