Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a talented Environmental and Sustainability Specialist with a passion for sustainability and an ability to deliver improved business performance. The right candidate will offer valuable sustainability expertise and will be a key team member in delivering the Sustainability elements of our ambitious improvement and growth plans over the next 5-10 years. We can be flexible with an element of hybrid working when appropriate however the successful candidate must be within a commutable distance from our Hawick base with onsite working preferred.
This role is an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic person to be part of our mission to grow and develop our business safely whilst achieving desired sustainability goals on decarbonization, materials circularity and waste management. You will be an excellent communicator and influencer with an ability to gain credibility across our organisation. This is a highly collaborative role, where you will engage cross-functional stakeholders across all internal departments as well as partners, suppliers, and Chanel colleagues.

What is the job purpose?
Supporting and guiding the business to ensure that our knitwear production and processing meet the sustainability criteria set by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This is a varied role that will involve compliance monitoring, certification management, continuous improvement, education, and stakeholder engagement.
What will you be doing?
- Support sustainability programmes and workstreams, integrating sustainability into commercial and supply chain practices
- Collaborate with key stakeholders in all Barrie departments to integrate sustainability KPI’s and support their successful delivery
- Undertake the collation and reporting of sustainability data including accurate reporting of Scope 3 carbon footprint, annual sustainability reports, B Corp certification and Textiles 2020
- Devise innovative ways to incorporate sustainability into Barrie’s standard operations, determining how to reduce the organisation’s environmental impact while maintaining our business’s ability to provide the highest quality products and services, supporting successful delivery of our OTIF (On Time in Full) KPI
- Develop robust sustainability policies to reduce risk and engage our supply base, managing and escalating issues to our Senior Management Team ensuring appropriate action and remediation is taken
- Oversee implementation of a robust certification process ensuring rigorous transparency and compliance, ensuring integration of proof of certification into all commercial documentation
- Oversee development and delivery of circularity strategy from product concept (design) to end-of-life
- Support the cultural and mindset change in Barrie Knitwear and develop awareness on Sustainability & Environmental topics with both internal and external stakeholders
What will you bring to the role?
- Degree or equivalent experience in a Sustainability/Environment discipline
- Knowledge of Environment Management Systems
- Knowledge of environmental issues including practices, policies, legislation, and stakeholders in manufacturing and waste management
- Experience in delivering project benefits
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
- An understanding of how to incorporate sustainability into business operations, finances, and developments
