To meet this challenge an opportunity has arisen for a Climate and Sustainability Officer, to assist the council achieve its strategic ambitions through the development and implementation of their climate change strategy and action plan that will ensure the climate change agenda is embedded across all services and operations.
The Climate and Sustainability Officer is an 18-month fixed term role with part-time hours. The post holder will have a strong understanding of environmental conservation, provide project and strategic support for carbon reduction and climate change activities, produce reports for full council, develop and implement comprehensive climate strategies and action plans, tailored to our local community’s needs and goals.
Job Purpose
As part of Camborne Town Council’s Climate Action Plan, the Climate and Sustainability Officer will play a pivotal role in championing and enhancing Camborne’s natural environment.
- Provide project and strategic support for a wide range of service projects, in particular the council’s carbon reduction and climate change activities across programmes, services and initiatives.
- Produce reports for full council, on adaptions, methods and frameworks.
- Monitor trends and change and reacts to new legislation, good practice and emerging technologies.
- Develop and implement comprehensive climate change strategies and action plans tailored to our local community’s needs and goals.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies, community organisations, and businesses, to drive collective efforts towards carbon reduction and sustainability.
- Conduct research and analysis to assess the impacts of climate change on our region and identify opportunities for adaptation and resilience.
- Collaborate across the Town Council teams and Members bringing together ideas, checking feasibility and implementing.
- Lead public engagement initiatives to raise awareness about climate change issues and encourage community participation in sustainability efforts.
- Support the Town Council in understanding the needs of the Community and their views around climate action.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of climate change initiatives, tracking key metrics and reporting progress to stakeholders and senior management.
- To work within agreed budgets, including the preparation of tenders and management of contracts, in accordance with the Councils procurement and financial controls.
- To identify opportunities for the Council and/or other partners, including community groups, to submit bids for external funding, taking the lead on preparing bids where appropriate.
- To assess the Climate and Ecological implications of Council decisions, assisting officers in preparing Council reports.
- To provide training and advice to Council staff, Councillors, and the local community on climate change, sustainability, and biodiversity.
- To attend Council, Committee, Working Group and Management meetings, including some evenings.
- Contribute to the management of the Council’s utility portfolio (electricity, gas and water) contract and examine opportunities to deliver savings and efficiencies.
- To comply with health and safety policies, organisational statements and procedures, report any incidents / accidents/ hazards and take a pro-active approach to health and safety matters in order to protect yourself and others.
- Keep up to date with regional and sub regional climate change activity and engage with national and sub-regional officer networks and forums.
- To undertake any other duties required by the management of the Town Council which are applicable to the grading or nature of the post, and which do not change the general character of the duties, or the level of responsibility entailed.
Person Specification
Educational Qualifications:
- GCSE Level 5 in Maths and English
- Equivalent working experience or relevant qualifications in community-focused roles, project management, and natural resource management.
- Degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of climate change and sustainability.
- Experience of developing and submitting funding bids and securing external funding
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience of working on climate change or related environmental issues.
- Experience working in the natural environment, with a strong understanding of environmental conservation principles and practices.
- Significant experience and good understanding of the cause and impacts of climate change, energy systems, sustainable building techniques, and biodiversity.
- Experience of developing and implementing projects that support climate mitigation and adaption goals.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritise and deliver multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to plan, organise, and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and best practices related to climate change and sustainability.

- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey ideas, engage stakeholders, and present project proposals.
