Can you help the New Forest become resilient and sustainable?
At New Forest District Council, we are committed to tackling the Climate Change and Nature Emergency and building a sustainable future for our communities, natural landscapes, and local economy. We’re looking for a passionate and proactive Sustainability Officer to join our team and help us turn this ambition into action.
You will be working as part of the Public Realm and Sustainability Team, leading on the development and delivery of projects that align to the NFDC Corporate Plan 2024-28, Future New Forest transformation programme, and Climate Change and Nature Emergency (CC&NE) Strategy and Action Plan. In this role you will deliver projects across our four CC&NE programmes – Carbon Reduction, Climate Adaptation, Nature Recovery and Programme Management, working with colleagues from a range of council services and supporting projects delivered through external partners.
Can you talk the talk?
You’ll understand the difference between climate mitigation and adaptation and have a good grasp of key concepts related to the breadth of climate and sustainability work, including energy efficiency, renewables, sustainable transport and nature. To succeed in this role, you need to be able to offer clarity and guidance to colleagues on technical topics, creating reports and presentations that are accurate and engaging to a range of stakeholders.
Can you walk the walk?
You will have the opportunity to be creative, innovative and drive activity within the team. Being proactive and championing sustainable behaviour change will help you inspire action across the organisation and the wider New Forest district.
You will be organised, methodical and a confident project administrator. The role will cover a range of tasks from general record keeping, to desk and site-based research exercises, and face to face stakeholder engagement. You will be able to monitor project progress, chasing actions where needed and recording and escalating issues where appropriate.
You will have had experience in a similar role, preferably in fields related to climate change and/or sustainability e.g. environment, energy, waste, transport, nature.
You will be able to demonstrate a good general knowledge of climate change and sustainability principles, as well as relevant legislation, policy and best practice for these fields. You will be confident in communicating this knowledge to a range of stakeholders.
You will have excellent ICT skills and be willing to learn and adapt to new systems and platforms as required.
