Overview

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). NERC is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Sustainability Data Manager to join the Innovation Team, who will be working closely with different teams across BAS to help the organisation decarbonise its operation and drive the delivery of the different carbon reduction strategies.

The successful candidate will need excellent analytical skills and previous experience in energy and carbon assessments. They will also play a vital role in understanding and presenting data underpinning decisions for the BAS Decarbonisation Management Group and the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) across energy, carbon, travel and wider sustainability. They will use the data for assessments and evaluations to diagnose issues, as well as identifying opportunities to reduce carbon, working closely with the Project Managers and staff across the AIMP, with Estates engineers and facilities managers providing data, information and delivering analysis to facilitate carbon reduction within infrastructure and wider projects. You will be assessing the energy performance of buildings and the savings achieved following completion of interventions or carbon reduction projects.

The successful candidate will be analysing the energy, fuel, and carbon data across Scope 1, 2 and 3 and reporting on performance across all areas of BAS operations including Cambridge offices, Antarctic Research Stations, Ships, Aircraft, Business Travel and activities linked to major projects under AIMP. You will be leading on the BAS carbon accounting work and reporting internally to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

This role supports the delivery and upkeep of targets and reporting, as set out by the UKRI sustainability strategy, as well as the mandatory HM Treasury Greening Government Commitments (GGCs).

The postholder will be taking part and contributing to meetings with NERC and other research organisations to share best practice and develop benchmarks. You will contribute to communicating the work undertaken at BAS as part of the Net Zero agenda to the wider polar community and the public.
