The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is seeking a Health, Safety, Sustainability and Compliance Manager to oversee our sustainability agenda and lead on the health, safety and welfare of our staff across the UK.

Job description

Reporting into the Assistant Director of Facilities Management, you will act as the CMA’s competent person for health and safety, as defined under the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines and will be responsible for ensuring the organisation meets all legal obligations for the health, safety, and welfare of its staff and stakeholders.

You will also lead the organisation’s sustainability agenda, including the development and implementation of corporate environmental strategies, policies and metrics, the delivery of the Greening Government Commitments, climate-related risk assessments and all sustainability related reporting, including Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).

You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with UK Government Functional Standards for Property (GovS 04: Property) and any other relevant Facilities Management and property related compliance for the CMA office space in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.


Person specification

  • Proven experience in a similar role with overall accountability for both Health & Safety and Sustainability in a complex public sector or corporate environment. (Lead Criteria)

  • Experienced in providing Sustainability reports, in line with TCFD, to form part of an organisation’s annual report. (Lead Criteria)

  • Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and best practice.

  • Previous knowledge of developing and implementing sustainability strategies, policies and procedures and previous experience of delivering against Greening Government Commitments.

  • Ability to influence stakeholders and drive cultural change across an organisation.

  • Demonstrable leadership and skills including mentoring, empowerment, and the development of staff, using strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering climate risk assessments and/or other ESG reporting.


In terms of Experience, in line with the Government Property Career Framework, the role is set at Practitioner level.

In terms of Technical skills, in line with the Government Property Career Framework the role requires the following skills:

Things you need to know

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.

The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review) and an interview. Arrangements for the interview will be enclosed in the invitation. Interviews will be conducted either virtually (Microsoft Teams) or in-person at a CMA office.

An initial sift based on criteria 1 and 2 (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification will then be considered.

  • Interview week commencing: 21 July 2025

The interview will include:

  1. A presentation/case study (details provided in advance)

  2. A 45-minute to 1-hour panel interview assessing Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills
