Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Head of SSE will lead the Environmental, Health and Safety Team in ensuring we are identifying risks, reporting on environmental issues to ensure compliance, and developing and delivering our sustainability strategy, keeping all stakeholders engaged and updated along the way.

 Your new role

  • Delivery, implementation, and monitoring of company EHS programmes including the Health and Safety, Sustainability and Environmental Management System, Policies and Procedures.
  • Providing departmental leadership including coaching and mentoring to ensure the effective deployment of the regional EHS managers across a multi-site business.
  • Collaborating with Site Directors to address site-specific challenges and opportunities.
  • Engaging with our customers, trade associations and group owners on shared projects.
  • Organising safety training in association with the Learning & Development Manager.
  • Taking ownership of the company’s EHS standards, and reviewing/developing appropriate policies and procedures to support these.
  • Taking responsibility for the Group’s abstraction and emissions licences, monitoring compliance and renewals.
  • Seeking continuous improvement opportunities and developing plans to deliver year on year improvements in SSE.
  • Identifying patterns and trends of incidents, driving hazard and near miss reporting, and supporting investigations to reach root causes to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Acting as primary relationship holder to the Health and Safety Executive and other enforcement authority bodies.
Requirements

What we need from you

We would stress that we are looking for someone who can really engage with the whole business from factory floor to Senior Manager/Board level. This position would suit an individual who is ambitious, committed and possesses strong leadership characteristics. We also need someone who is well organised, passionate, approachable and self-motivated.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience: 

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification essential
  • Previous experience in Health & Safety Management with a focus on ESG in a multi-site environment and leading, managing and coaching EHS teams
  • Experience in developing HSE management systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the HSAWA
  • Knowledge and understanding of sustainability and environmental risks
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies and procedures in SSE and able to implement best practice

In addition, you will need to have proof of eligibility to work in the UK, and hold a UK driving licence.
