This is an exciting opportunity for an action-oriented professional with a passion for sustainability to help TfL deliver on our vision to be the strong, green heartbeat for London.
We are looking for an Assistant Sustainability Manager to assist in the coordination of work to embed sustainability across the organisation, to drive clear and transparent governance through rapid change in this industry, and to help identify and address gaps in the organisation’s capabilities.
This member of the team will support the Governance function for the Environment and Sustainability team, including supporting contributions to corporate publications, management of internal governance functions, preparations and actions related to engagement with the TfL Board, Mayor of London / Deputy Mayors of London and the Executive Committee.
The role holder needs to have good organisational awareness, be a strategic thinker, great communicator and good at quickly building positive relationships with influencers and decision makers around the business. They need to be well organised, have excellent people skills and good project and programme management skills to maintain focus on coordination of the changing landscape of TfL governance, structure and delivery in relation to the environment and sustainability agenda.
We are hiring for two positions: one permanent and one 12-month secondment / Fixed Term Contract (Full-time; flexible working arrangements considered)
Key accountabilities
- Championing a culture change mindset with pragmatism, creativity, and positivity. Support and challenge the business to deliver activities in the TfL Corporate Environment Plan and beyond.
- Pro-actively and collaboratively working with colleagues internally and externally, to identify opportunities, build detailed plans and drive delivery.
- Identifying, monitor and report on day-to-day coordination and tracking of activities and progress to senior managers to ensure continued progress. Ensure all relevant colleagues are clear on project deliverables, deadlines, and quality criteria.
- Escalating unresolved issues, risks and dependencies at the earliest possible opportunity; offers solutions and options of how these issues can be addressed.
- Engaging in training and knowledge building activities with colleagues to enhance knowledge and culture change across the organisation.
- Pro-actively assess resource and capabilities gaps and work collaboratively to develop strategies and opportunities to build those capabilities within teams to accelerate the sustainability agenda.
- The job holder will ensure early industry and other external intelligence is shared across the business and used to inform our work.

Requirements
Essential:
- Knowledge of the legislative and political landscape and the governance structures in London.
- A basic understanding of climate change and nature loss and the challenges cities and the UK face as they decarbonise and seek to adapt to a changing climate, with a keen interest to continually learn as these disciplines evolve.
- Experience of influencing and negotiating with colleagues to arrive at a mutually beneficial outcome.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to continually expand and improve in this area.
- Strong ability to deliver on multiple workstreams using systems thinking. A strong ability to deliver on tight deadlines in a complex, high-paced environment and to an outstanding standard.
- Experience teaching, coaching or leading instruction.
- Ability to deliver complex projects in an open, transparent and collaborative way; the ability to identify solutions and opportunities and successfully achieve defined benefits.
- Experience facilitating inclusive, collaborative discussions that stay focused on an agenda and delivery.
- Excellent ability to build working relationships with people at all levels across the organisation and externally.
- Proven verbal, written and presentation communication skills and strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills with an ability to manage competing interests.
- Extremely comfortable presenting before large groups and ability to actively listen, field challenging questions and capture, clarify and act on feedback and suggestions.
- Outstanding attention to detail and pro-active in maintaining clear, current records and plans.
- Experience pro-actively managing detailed accounts, records and notes to a very high standard.
- Thrives when working independently and as part of a team.
Desirable:
- Recognised project management qualification and/or evidence of strong experience in project management.
- Expertise in project management including understanding of project scoping and design, project planning, risk, issue and dependency management, resource planning and forecasting, financial management and analysis and reporting.
- Proven record of delivering complex projects.
