Overview
Job purpose: To lead the development and implementation of the Grŵp’s environmental strategy, ensuring our operations align with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015. You will drive the College toward the Welsh Government’s target of a Net Zero Public Sector by 2030, ensuring that sustainability is integrated into our estates, our curriculum, and our local Welsh communities.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Provide direct line management to the SHE team administrator, including induction and performance management.
- Work with and support the Grŵp’s Executive lead on sustainability to implement its “Roadmap to net zero”,tracking progress against targets.
- Coordinate and collate data for Streamlines Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and other statutory environmental returns.
- Ensure all sustainability projects support the Future Generations Act’s “five ways of working”.
- Lead the organisation compliance with the Environment Wales Act 2016, maintaining biodiversity and the resilience of ecosystems across the Grŵp’s campuses.
- Oversee and manage waste management contracts, striving for zero waste and high quality recycling streams.
- Work with the Procurement Officer to integrate environmental factors into the supply chain and tendering process.
- Work with teaching staff to embed “green skills” and sustainability into the curriculum delivery.
- Attend local SHE meetings as required, providing relevant information, including the preparation of papers and reports for discussion and action.
- Develop and deliver environmental and sustainability training and briefings as appropriate across the Grŵp to raise the competence levels of managers and staff.
- Carry out environmental impact assessments on Grŵp policies prior to approval, providing advice and recommendations on their impact on the environment.
- Lead and / or support environmental campaigns for staff and students.
- To work closely with the Health and Safety Officers, providing advice on environmental and sustainable matters.
- Work closely with third parties such as emergency services, HSE and other enforcement, regulatory or Insurance inspectors as required.
- Complete and provide expert advice on the completion of environmental risk assessments, ensuring they are maintained and up to date.
- Undertake environmental incident investigations and implement (and/or coordinate) remedial work as appropriate.
- Support the development and implementation of appropriate Grŵp systems, policies, standards and procedures to ensure that all environmental legislative and external agency requirements are met or exceeded, including Welsh Government sponsored Natural Resources Wales requirements.
- To work as an effective team member of SHE professionals to deliver a first class support service.
- Maintain up to date professional knowledge of environmental legislation, including the Environment Act 2021, Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 and local biodiversity requirements.
- Develop and implement an annual work plan that outlines objectives and deliverables for planned and recurring activities that highlights the work of the organisation.
- Schedule and conduct regular inspections and audits, identifying and following through any corrective actions required.
- Maintain professional membership (e.g., IEMA) and participate in relevant workshops or seminars to ensure advice given to the Grŵp is current and authoritative.

Person specification
Essential:
- Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science or Sustainability or equivalent.
- Associate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
- Minimum of 2 years in environmental management and / or carbon reduction.
- Experience of supporting development and dissemination of policies/ standards.
- Working effectively in an environment of complex regulations and procedures (e.g. Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015).
- High standard of interpersonal and influencing skills and ability to work with a wide variety of staff at all levels to act as a role model and a change agent.
- Strong communication and people skills.
- Ability to work on your own initiative.
- Competent user of IT applications including use of spreadsheets, database and word- processing.
- Ability and willingness to challenge and address issues of non-compliance.
- Ability to manage working time to meet targets and deadlines.
- Commitment to maintaining CPD and professional membership.
- Ability to travel flexibly across all campuses.
Desirable:
- CIWEM membership.
- First Aid qualification.
- Auditing qualification.
