Berkshire Healthcare has an exciting opportunity for the role of Sustainability Lead Manager, where you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself and drive meaningful action in the rapidly evolving green agenda, while being at the forefront of change.
Your efforts will directly contribute to reducing our carbon and environmental footprint, improving resource efficiency, and elevating the sustainability profile of our healthcare services.
You will apply your expertise in areas such as energy, travel and transport, sustainable procurement, waste management, and biodiversity, while deepening your understanding of the links between environmental health and physical/mental health. You’ll use your strong people and communication skills to collaborate widely across the Trust and beyond, building your professional network while fostering innovation and continuous improvement, supporting our essential progress towards local, regional and national green targets.
Working closely with the Head of Compliance & Risk Services and the Berkshire Healthcare Green Group, you will be responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of business plans, strategies and policies to support the Trust and wider NHS’s commitment to reach net zero by 2045.
Main duties of the job
This is a senior manager Trust-wide role requiring the successful candidate to have well developed leadership, communication, influence, and change management skills. The role has both strategic and operational responsibilities in the management of the Trust’s sustainability and green agenda. There is flexibility for some work from home and other Trust locations across Berkshire to support both clinical and non-clinical teams with the delivery of local expectations. You will:
- Be responsible for the ongoing delivery and further development of our Trust’s Green Plan and all programmes of work under this strategy, ensuring that we are on track to meet our sustainability targets and obligations
- Be our lead contact for sustainability with an overarching responsibility to develop and embed sustainability principles across all our Trust’s work, decision-making and practices
- Develop and promote improved energy efficiency and support the Trust’s commitment to reduce energy usage and CO2 emissions
- Collate and analyse complex information to monitor and report on our progress, and assist in securing funding for the implementation of sustainable/ environmental projects
- Promote, lead and raise awareness on activities, campaigns, or projects
- Work with the communications team and net zero heroes to develop staff engagement initiatives aimed at supporting our green agenda
- Prepare and apply for external funding, where this is available
The “must haves” for this role:
- Specialist knowledge of environmental/sustainability requirements, issues and management
- Ability to communicate and present highly technical, complex and contentious information at all levels using a variety of methods
- Able to collate and analyse complex data and present statistically analysed information
- Influencing and negotiating skills
- Educated to degree level or holds an alternative acceptable qualification with relevant experience
- Post Graduate Diploma or similar professional qualification in related subject
- Specialist knowledge of Environmental/ Sustainability requirements
- Experience of managing and working at senior management level
- Conversant with relevant legal and good practice documentation
- Minimum of 5 years in a similar role
- Sound understanding of Health & Safety requirements
- Ability to work at times in a pressurised environment
- Must possess a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Knowledge of specialist function of sustainability management
- Strong customer focus
- Ability to keep abreast of developments and new legislation
- Able to chair and participate in meetings
- Excellent or Advanced keyboard skills
- Able to delegate and prioritise workload

- Driving licence
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of procuring and managing utilities contracts
- Management Certificate or equivalent level
- IOSH Accredited Certificate
- Experience with local authorities
- 2 years’ experience gained in the NHS
- Professional registration
- ECDL or equivalent
- An understanding of the NHS and its values
- BEMS knowledge
- Knowledge of Building Practice
- Ability to formulate ideas and present as proposals for policies and projects
