Overview
Taunton Town Council is on a mission to create a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future. We’re looking for a passionate and driven Climate & Sustainable Place Officer to help lead our response to the climate and ecological emergency and support our ambitious goal of carbon neutrality.
This is a varied and influential role where you’ll lead the delivery of the Council’s Climate & Ecological Emergency Plan. You’ll design and implement initiatives that reduce carbon emissions, enhance green spaces, and promote sustainable living across Taunton.
You’ll collaborate with partners including community groups, government agencies, and neighbouring councils to drive forward innovative environmental projects.

Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver the Climate & Ecological Emergency Plan and drive progress toward carbon neutrality
- Measure, monitor, and reduce the Council’s carbon footprint
- Develop and implement environmental policies and sustainable initiatives
- Build partnerships to support climate and sustainability projects
- Lead community engagement, training sessions, and awareness campaigns
- Produce reports and recommendations for senior leaders and committees
- Support green space strategies and environmental planning
- Identify funding opportunities and develop business cases for projects
You’ll be a proactive, knowledgeable, and collaborative professional who is passionate about sustainability.
Requirements
Essential:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in environmental science, sustainability, planning or related field
- Experience in environmental project management and community engagement
- Strong understanding of climate change, sustainability, and ecological issues
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills (internal and external)
- Ability to analyse data and develop practical solutions
- Full driving licence and proficient in Microsoft Office
Desirable:
- Knowledge of environmental policy and town planning
- Experience working in local government
- Understanding of procurement, compliance, and health & safety practices
