The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major investment to be made in the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield. TRU is a multi-billion-pound, transformative, long-term railway infrastructure programme that will improve connectivity in the North. It will support economic growth in the North and deliver real benefits for passengers and communities along this pivotal rail artery.

BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Sustainability Director for the TRU West Alliance to support TRU in delivering ‘Our Guiding Compass’ – the programme’s sustainable development strategy. At the TRU West Alliance we believe sustainable development is the only way to keep on track to a better and more sustainable future. We support the Programme to think, act and deliver with a focus on positive environmental outcomes across every aspect of the project and service lifecycle.

This Sustainability Director will lead from the front, setting the direction and influencing and challenging the industry, our partners and clients across TRU’s  Sustainability themes for the TRU West Project. The role will also have a real focus on engaging and educating the project and harnessing our collective organisational strength to deliver on our strategic commitments.

Your mission:

  • Deliver strategy and policy to create an industry-leading scheme-aligned approach that meets strategic sustainability targets.
  • Compliance remains a critically important aspect of the role; ensuring TRU meets its statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive cultural change and influence senior stakeholders across the business and wider industry.
  • Leading on key strategic accounts, and partnerships & contributing to policy development, establishing the Alliance as an industry leader.
  • Build a high performing, talented team of sustainability professionals who challenge the agenda across every stage of the project.
  • Engage selected audiences in our supply chain and improve management using their expertise.
  • Deploy an industry leading approach to business education and engagement which instils sustainability thinking into every part of the TRU West Alliance.
  • Add value to the business and expand our capability by developing internal expertise to deliver the TRU 2035 social value and environmental aims.

Who are we looking for?

The TRU West Alliance requires a true leader, strategic thinker and collaborator to bring together a complex, challenging and exciting range of activities that make up sustainability across the scheme. Your experience, skills and attributes will include:

  • Significant experience in Sustainability leadership ideally in Engineering, Construction and other markets.
  • A successful track record of driving the implementation of a Sustainability strategy, with a strong focus on engagement.
  • Demonstrable experience in driving Sustainability themes and achievement of key targets in this area.
  • A business leader with experience of building and developing teams.
  • A committed networker who builds enduring relationships both internally and externally.
  • An excellent communicator with a history of building business knowledge and understanding of Sustainability.
  • A thorough understanding of sustainability and governance, legal, statutory and technical issues which affect both client & the Alliance.
  • Degree in a related discipline.
  • Ideally a chartered member of a relevant professional body.
